Deru - 1979

Music Album Design

2017

This album is a reflection on the childhood memories of DERU. I wanted to show that his approach influences listeners to delve deep into their own memories and deliver a new experience. In addition to this, I wanted the design to reflect the movement of electronic sounds in music. The keyword of this project is stream. This could be a stream of sounds, consciousness, thoughts, memories and time. The artwork's meaning is communicated through the use of clean typography, and minimal lines with pieces of abstract images. These are fluid movements on monochrome/ coloured paper, disrupted by occasional dots of striking colour. I created the contemporary abstract images that I associated with the meaning of this album in an experimental and unexpected format. I started creating my own visual language, relating to the music, by focusing on scanned and distorted images of a comb. I used a comb, because I feel it symbolises a sound-wave, or a stream of sound. The artwork is abstract, impactful and strong, with a focus on movement and colours. I used modern technology to create the image through the process of copying and cropping.
